Right to object to processing of personal data
Objecting to processing of personal data is a right under the EU data protection law, the GDPR. Individuals have the right to object to an organisation processing their personal data if they feel it is not compatible with their rights. An individual or an organization can object. They can be communicated verbally or written.
The right to object is subject to certain conditions. The first condition is that the processing must be necessary for a legitimate purpose. The second condition is that processing must be proportionate. The processing must be transparent and must uphold the rights of the data subject. You can object to any personal data that an organisation holds, or to certain pieces of information.
You should explain why you object and why you want it to be stopped when you make an objection. If you have evidence supporting your request, you should include it.
Organisations must give you a reasonable amount of time to respond to your objection. They must inform you in writing if they require additional time to address the objection within one month after receiving the request. They must also explain why they require the additional time.
If an objection is valid, an organisation must stop processing the personal data. Organisations may still process personal information for other purposes. They must also give data subjects information about the results of the objection.
Companies should also have policies for assessing objections. This covers the handling of objections, the assessment of objections and the preservation of records. Companies must also provide an online method for objecting.
